Emergency Management


Our Disaster Management courses are tailored to help you create effective plans for reducing vulnerability in times of emergencies, as well as how to cope with disasters when they happen. The significance of this course lies in the fact that failure to create such plans could lead to loss of human life, loss of livelihoods, loss of revenues, and damage to property. Our course is tailored to help you manage disasters such as terrorism, industrial sabotage, fire, natural disasters (such as earthquakes), public disorder, industrial accidents, and communication failures. Core units include:


1. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT IN EMERGENCY SERVICES

This course takes the form and structure of our flagship leadership and management course but lays special emphasis on emergency services management.

PRIMARY AUDIENCE 

Emergency Services personnel with management roles. This may involve those running county ambulance and fire services, private ambulances among others.


2. FUNDAMENTALS OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

The goal of this course is to introduce you to the fundamentals of emergency management. This course presents emergency management as an integrated system with resources and capabilities networked together to address all hazards.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the principles and authorities that are the foundation of emergency management.
  • Explain how the different partners contribute to emergency management in your community.
  • Explain how the core capabilities support the mission areas to ensure preparedness.
  • Describe the roles of each partner in emergency management.
  • Explain the steps and resources necessary for developing a comprehensive emergency operations plan.
  • Explain how to plan, manage, and coordinate resources for an efficient and effective response.
  • Explain the functions of emergency management in emergency and day-to-day situations.

PRIMARY AUDIENCE

This entry-level course is designed for individuals new to the field of emergency management or persons with a desire to understand the fundamentals of emergency management.


3. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND PLANNING

This course is designed for emergency management personnel who are involved in developing an effective emergency planning system. This course offers training in the fundamentals of the emergency planning process, including the rationale behind planning. It will develop your capability for effective participation in the all-hazard emergency operations planning process to save lives and protect property threatened by disaster.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify doctrine and guidance for emergency planning.
  • Indicate the relationship between preparedness and planning.
  • Identify the purpose and components of an emergency operations plan.
  • Identify the steps in the planning process.
  • Determine the status of your jurisdiction’s emergency planning.

PRIMARY AUDIENCE

All individuals involved in crisis and emergency management decision making.


4. SECURITY AND CRISIS MANAGEMENT

This three-day intensive course will enable participants to identify the key requirements for managing safety and security in complex situations by practicing essential techniques in risk management, security assessment, and crisis response. The course draws on field case studies, realistic scenario and lessons learnt from previous similar incidents.

The gem of this course is a crisis management table top exercise that put the participants through the pressures of managing a security crisis.


5. BUSINESS CONTINUITY

This course introduces participants to the concept of Business continuity planning.  The course provides a brief overview of continuity, including its definition, the legal basis for continuity planning, the Continuity Program Management Cycle, and essential elements of a viable continuity program.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Define continuity of operations.
  • Identify the legal basis for continuity of operations.
  • Explain the Continuity Program Management Cycle.
  • Describe the elements of a viable continuity program.

PRIMARY AUDIENCE

The primary audiences for this course are persons with direct responsibility to manage business operations. This may include but not limited to heads of branches, Country office managers among others from businesses, NGOs and government department providing essential services.
